Description

African Night Crawlers are a species of earthworm that can grow up to 20cm or larger.  They can be identified by a dark red to purple colour on their top side, with an iridescent sheen when exposed to light.  They have a distinct, raised clitellum/saddle similar to the red wiggler but larger.

They are good composting worms and great for use as fishing bait.  They can eat their body weight in food each day, making them very efficient in breaking down kitchen waste and producing castings.  They are susceptible to cold and should be kept above 15 degrees, but can tolerate higher temperatures of up to 32 degrees without problems.  They reproduce quickly and reach reproductive maturity in 35 – 50 days.

African night crawlers can be good composting worms when kept happy and in the correct conditions, however, we recommend red wigglers for beginners.
